2022 Summer Study Abroad in Dublin, Ireland features the BIOL 490 course Medical Biochemistry and Disease. This upper-division undergraduate course examines key molecules, biochemical pathways, and molecular mechanisms while exploring how they impact human disease. Biochemical topics to be studied include enzymes, molecular biology, nutrition and diet, exercise, and carbohydrate, fatty acid, amino acid, and nucleotide metabolism. Selected diseases to be examined include cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, blood disorders, gout, storage diseases, and genetic disorders, including inborn errors in metabolism. Besides studying the biochemical basis of disease, the class will address therapies, including drug treatments and modern approaches, such as gene therapy. The class format combines lecture and in-class discussion of medical case studies with biochemical concepts and methods.
